Google search console previously known as Google Webmaster Tools is one of the best free Google Tool, SEO tools, and Website Analytics Tool out there but most people use it for pure vanity metrics like checking impressions or clicks.

Others use it to look at the average ranking position. but these things provide very little value in SEO so today I'm going to show you how to use Google Search Console to actually improve SEO for your website.

Google Search Console is a great SEO tool that helps you grow your search traffic, research your competitors, and dominate your niche.

So before we dig into the process I'm gonna assume that you know it very well that what is Google Webmaster Tools is, How to Signup, it's benefits and complete process of submitting and verifying your first website and submitting your website sitemap also...

How To Use Google Search Console For Improving Website SEO:-

This Tutorial is a further process after submitting your sitemap into Google Search Console and getting some views and impressions on your website so that Google Webmaster Tools can fetch and crawl your website data and show you an overview reports with all error, issues and keywords and queries.

Therefore, the above process may take some days or weeks before showing you these data and reports, so have the patience for a few days after submitting your sitemap or individual pages into Google Search Console Sitemap Tool.

When you have enough data on your Search Console Dashboard with details, you need to follow these tips and strategies for improving your website SEO...

1. Improve click-through rate for underperforming keywords:-

Underperforming Keywords:- let's define an underperforming keyword on any page where you don't rank in positions 1 or 2 for that keyword in google search results.

It is important because if you look at this graph of the CTR curve you'll notice that anything not in positions 1 or 2 gets significantly very less search traffic.

For example, if your page is ranking in position 7 your CTR will be around 2.71 on mobile, and 2.32 on desktop only.

This means if you get 100 impressions your page link will get only 2-3 clicks only when you ranking on 7th position.

Now if you were able to bump that keyword ranking to position 2 your click-through rate would be around 15.72 on mobile and 14.1 on desktop, also if you are able to bump that keyword ranking position 1 your CTR would be 32.28 on mobile and 25.43 on desktop.

This means if your keyword ranking on 2nd position and you getting 100 impression or views on you page link, you probably get 15-16 clicks on mobile and around 14 on desktop, and when you get to number 1 rank you may get 32-33 clicks on mobile and 25-26 on desktop.

So, if we compare all ranking positions you will get 7 times more click in comparison to 7th ranking position, and 16 times more clicks when you stand on number 1 position.

To find these underperforming keywords go to the Google Search Console results report under the performance tab and make sure that you've clicked on the "Average CTR" and "Average Position" boxes, so they show up in the table below in Search Console.

Next, scroll down to the table and set a positions filter to show pages that have an average ranking position of less than 8.1, the reason being it's easier to move from position 8 to the top 2

Since you'll get more exposure than the absolute bottom of page 1, now one limitation to Google Search Console is that it will not let you set a position rang.

So we'll just sort the table by position in descending order so that you can view the best underperforming keyword at first, and start skimming through the keywords for quarries we may want to optimize our pages for.

We'll also focus on the number of impressions because there's no point in optimizing for a quarry with 20-25 impressions.

Now select an underperforming keyword under the "query" section, a keyword that got enough impressions but got a few clicks.

Click on that keyword then go to the "Pages" tab, where you should do an individual analysis of that page, and see if you can further optimize for the keyword. Whether that be on-page work adding internal links or something else, try your best course of action and experiment.

2. Find & Analyze Pages With High Keyword Rankings But Low CTR

Sometimes a keyword that ranks in position one, but not getting Good Click-Through Rate. Therefore what we need to do...
  • To find out which keywords have low CTRs
  • Analyze the cause 
  • See if there's a way to get more clicks and traffic to our pages.
Now see in the Google Search Console results report. change the position filter to the ranking position of less than 3, sort the table by CTR from lowest to highest.

Now find a keyword with Good Impressions but Low CTR ranking on top 3 positions. see on the screenshot below. Here is a keyword "DIY SEO" which ranking under 3 position but have very low CTR 1.9% only.

While ranking in the top 3 CTR should be somewhere in the range of 9 to 15%, but it is getting only 2% results, which is far less than average.

And, now go to Google and search for this particular keyword, here you get to know the featured snippet takes up a ton of real views then it's followed by videos, the people also ask box, etc then your page which is actually the number one organic ranking.

So, in this case, we could definitely work on...
  • Trying to own that featured snippets
  • We could also create a video tutorial around the topic to try and claim a spot in the video carousel
Sometimes you get low CTR only because the entire top section is plastered with ads, and featured snippets, and then the organic results are shown.

In this case, it would come down to your keywords priorities. Therefore a commercial intent to that keyword, you can't take these down. and if you want to optimize and own the featured snippet it may be worth the effort but since there are a ton of ads, only the featured snippet may not result in the best.

3. Check for Sitemap Errors Warnings And Exclusions:-

Sitemaps are files that tell search engines which pages are important on your site they also help crawlers crawl your site more efficiently. So, if you have issues with your sitemap, this could be confusing crawlers to crawl your site properly.

For fixing Sitemap's issues go to the Google Search Console Dashboard and click on the "Sitemaps" tab and on sitemaps report click on the icon beside the sitemap you want to investigate.

You'll see a few tabs showing the number of errors warnings valid URLs and excluded ones. there are the multiple issues types you may have to fix. Get in-depth training fixing sitemap issues on Google Webmaster Tools.

4. Find pages that need internal links:-

When you publish a new post such as "Top 5 keyword research tool for beginners", and if you already have relevant pages let's say "SEO Tips" and another one is "Blogging Tools".

It would make sense to add internal links from these pages pointing at your new post and assuming that you've built some link authority to these pages.

Therefore, there is a good chance that your new page will get indexed faster and rank higher. If certain posts don't have many or any internal links then it probably doesn't get much search traffic or provide no value to your site.

So, here we utilize the Google Search Console "Links" tab where you'll see a summary of various categories for both external & internal links, and when you click on the "More" link under internal links, you will get a larger view of internal links.

Sort the table by the number of internal links pointing at our target pages to find the forgotten one of the pages. if you find pages that are worth keeping then they'd be advantageous to either an add more internal links pointing at them or update the content and add more internal links.

If you had an old post on "Tailwind" that was out-of-date, therefore we first update our content to make it relevant to today then we'll go to google and search for something www.digitalmarketingtools/Tailwind the query this will show you all pages on your site that include your target keyword.

There just visit the pages and add internal links where it makes sense. The main downside to Google Search Console's internal links report is that they don't show you pages that have zero internal links these are called orphan pages.

Now assuming there are no external backlinks pointing at these orphan pages, this poses a problem because they can't be crawled by Google and won't be indexed and never discovered.

Still, Google Search Console is a super powerful tool, and when it comes to accuracy for your own site, I strongly recommend using it.
